A Lighting Technology Company
Founded in 2008, Exergy Controls provides individual management of indoor lighting and exterior parking, walkway and roadway lighting fixtures. Exergy’s unique wireless “mesh” network creates a digital address for each light fixture, allowing them to be controlled individually or in groups. Outdoor lighting system performance can be tailored to switch or dim individual fixtures as traffic in parking and roadways diminish. Exterior fixtures can be managed independently or as part of a unified interior & exterior lighting control and management system.
Partner, Sales & Marketing
Jim Haas is a lifetime veteran of the energy and lighting sector. Along with Dr. Myles Baker, Jim co-founded Exergy Controls in 2008 to provide comprehensive digital management of interior and exterior lighting fixtures.
In leading the company’s sales and marketing efforts, Jim was successful in forging early relationships with the California State University system and the VA Hospital. Exergy Controls has installed numerous control systems at these and other sites, leading to year-over-year revenue growth and a grant from PIER, the innovation arm of the California Energy Commission.
Jim spent a great deal of his career in corporate marketing and sales: as Director of Marketing for Thomas’s Accent Lighting Division as well as National Sales and Marketing Manager for JJI’s start-up ALL division. He also held regional sales and marketing roles at Kurt Versen Company and Elliptipar developing their western regions.
He has also worked in the agency side of the business, working with some of the most discerning lighting designers, electrical engineers, and architects. Jim began his career at the age of 10 working alongside his father (eventually becoming a principal) in the San Diego firm Haas Lighting as well as working in Los Angeles with Total Lighting Concepts. While in Los Angeles he worked with a number of large end-users such as Disney Imagineering, Universal Theme Parks, Segerstrom, and The Irvine Company.
Jim holds a B.A. in Marketing from San Diego State University and holds an M.B.A from University of San Diego.
Myles Baker, Ph.D.
Dr. Myles Baker has made significant achievements in project management and systems engineering for large integrated hardware and software programs with extensive background in engineering analysis and design, scientific computing, design optimization, and software development. He is the founder of two energy-related companies, holding numerous highly regarded structural design patents.
Dr. Baker began his career at Boeing, developing multidisciplinary aircraft analysis software, and was one of the main process architects for the structural optimization processes used to design a next-generation supersonic transport airplane. He managed the development of several advanced computational modeling, analysis, and optimization tools for aircraft and other systems, as well as the use of networks of personal computers for parallel engineering computations. His interest in controls began with work he performed with Boeing and NASA in control of aircraft and aircraft systems, which has helped form his vision for a completely different approach to lighting controls.
Dr. Baker is a member of several engineering professional organizations, and has numerous patents and technical publications.
Dr. Baker holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, all from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
